Why not Zoidberg? (Sorry, I had to.)

In response to your question (?):

1) I'd prefer Oppo be an inclusive place for more of the auto enthusiast community. In the past, concerns have been expressed about this sort of thing, and how members of the community feel about it. The dismissive attitude about off-topic material serves only to suggest that those individuals concerns are not important. That puts the value of posting pictures of women in states of undress over the value of respecting other members of the community.

1b) If people want to post up pictures, that's what personal Kinjas are for. Link to the NSFW stuff there, if you feel so compelled.

2) I like to read Oppo on lunch at work. Every NSFW post is one post closer to getting it black-listed.

3) The NSFW crap adds nothing to the posts. There, I said it.

Why? Because I respect my wife and want to protect my kids (and yours too). I do everything I can to share my love of cars with my family. But posts like these, along with all of the foul language, means I can't share one of the coolest corners of the internet with them. Frankly, it's embarrassing. It's embarrassing to say that I read the site knowing that it is used to distribute pornography.

Sure, we have installed software which keeps this kind of stuff away from our kids. But it means that to share a cool post, I have to temporarily unblock the site, copy everything and send it via e-mail, or show it to them on my computer. I can't just point them to the site as a resource and let the kids go.

There is a place for porn. A site for automobile enthusiasts isn't it. You can have your cake and eat it too. Just do it where it is appropriate.

It isn't just my problem. There are plenty of people who would like to see enjoy more of the internet without smut. I'm not asking for people to be saints, I'd just like it if they could keep it clean enough for a 10-year-old.

Regarding trust, I trust my wife without reservation. My children? No. They aren't old enough to have good judgement. Every good parent puts limitations on what their kids see and do. When they are old enough, I'll start opening the firewall to more "worldly" sites. For now, it remains g-rated.

I wish it didn't have to be this way, but some people are determined to mix their porn with their cars. Why they can't control themselves and keep the cars g-rated?

Like, really? Me speaking out about sexism warrants a gif showing cum facials? That's not ok.

Kinja'd!!!12

Here's my issue with NSFW material on Oppo. It's literally the most often used tag on here. And if you google Oppositelock.jalopnik.com the first suggestion that isn't the verbatim search is NSFW, and the first subresult is NSFW.

Kinja'd!!!

This is literally what Oppo has defined itself by in terms of an impartial search crawler. The threads here are problematic and warnings are about to handed out for specific behavior having nothing to do with the original post.

Not clicking is not an acceptable argument, there are many many arguments which hold more water than this one, but if this were borderline against the policies we have for any other subject which is verboten, then "don't click" or "keep on scrolling" would be a ban worthy response for racism or personal attacks on others. If I posted a pro-racism post, and told everyone who was offended to just ignore it, it wouldn't end there. It shouldn't end here either.

I'm not sure if you missed PaulJones's post on the subject, but just in case, here is Matt's tweet when it was new:

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

You can click through and see the post and conversation came from it. We aren't looking to remove all NSFW content on Oppo, but we are looking to reduce it, or to put into context of other material. And in my eyes (which aren't the only ones, and this is only my opinion) this post (and MANY others like it) where people post nothing but pictures of cars and women, are noise. There are SO MANY other places you can find these pictures, I don't understand why anyone feels the need to share them.

We are a diverse group of people, and we've scared off readers in the past, and we've made it so that some opponauts can't even browse the site when at work because of the classification we've earned.

If you don't agree with me, that's fine. But you might want to familiarize yourself with the handbook and the other posts from moderators.

I do realize that. Boneyard Rendezvous' response was an excellent example of that. The pictures in the above article however, do not fall into that category, and that's the point I'm trying to make. If someone were to post an entire string of pictures like Rendezvous', delete the post, ban them, send the swat team to their house, whatever you need to do is fine with me. But a few scantily clad women mixed in with my car porn certainly brightens my day.

Kinja'd!!!

NSFW, or rather tits, 'cause let's be honest, no one is posting gore or scat, is the only content that gets labeled as noise on this off-topic forum. Funny. :]

Kinja'd!!!

Also, search engines are impartial, yes. However. However, however, however. They achieve this via certain metrics. If everytime an NSFW thread pops up, there's a shitstorm, this will contribute a lot of weight to NSFW being displayed as a top result. And were it really that much of a problem, there are ways to dissuade search engines from indexing certain content on a given site. In fact, any half-decent platform or whatever Kinja is trying to be, should have functionality built in. Something as simple as letting only signed in members see NSFW tagged posts and you're done.

Kinja'd!!!

I do this kind of stuff for a living, so I can verify, it really is no effort to do it. Much less than having moderators copy/paste the same ol' ringamarole everytime this pops up. Unless... are you a script? :D

Kinja'd!!!

Come on Kinja-overlords. Let's not blame people's desire to view tits for incompetence of your code monkeys*. Perhaps look into orangutans. Though, I have a sneaking suspicion it's not the code monkeys that are the problem.

Kinja'd!!!

Also, I'm an ass man, so this is fairly inconsequential to me.

Kinja'd!!!

Oh, and, I posted a bunch of pics of my car(s), as to illustrate a point which I consider noise: Ceaseless personal bulls**t threads.

Along with the holiday, polandball, anime, gaming, tech support, smartphone, religion, movie, pets, babies and music posts that have nothing to do with cars. But those get the " it's an off topic section, literally anything goes here " treatment. 's cool, 's cool. I can get with the program and not get upset over it. Though, you do realise that you've lost many a reader due to such decisions.

Kinja'd!!!

Now, please, take this post as it is. Humble. Simple. Sincere. And take the time to read it with a cool head, as to avoid finding it offensive or some such gibberish. Look at the kid in the picture above. That's me. Would I lie to you? I just like cars and the occasional tit, damn it. Though, to be honest, at that age, I mostly cared about cars.

Below is my 21st birthday cake. It was delicious, but small. Below that is the girl who made it. She has great tits and a greater personality (according to most people, anyway). Below her is the car we've shagged in a couple of times. It was slow but I loved it and named it Darlene and cried when it got scrapped. Anyway, by this age, I obviously cared about tits. I dunno, something happened, and now I find these to go together rather well. Might throw a cute chubby cat in there as well. Done.

Why is this still an issue on Oppo?

AT LEAST HALF the internet is porn. Why does it have to invade our little corner?

For those who want to look at porn I suggest xvideos, tube8 and pornhub. Those who want to look at cars and take part in the car community I suggest Oppo, Jalopnik, and Autoblog.

It's pretty clear that a lot of people have issues with NSFW posts, and not just the women of Oppo. So why is this still an issue that pops up every few months.

Why aren't the mods doing shit about this? Is it because they are lame duck committee of mods who simply can't agree on anything and refuse to walk the walk, when they talk the talk about this being an inclusive community.

Maybe I'll start petitioning Hardibro to clean this shit up if the mods won't lift a finger.

I've said this before, and I'm about to say it again... I like cars. I like women. It could be argued that I love both cars and women, about equally. Women a little more, but that's the nature of the game.

However, I, and the rest of the working world have determined that looking at cars while on break at work is acceptable, while looking at scantily-clad women is not. In addition, the women who would LOVE to be a part of our community are turned off by the constant posting of their half of our species in an objectified manner.

I really don't have a problem with porn, or NSFW pictures, but Oppo really isn't the place for it. That's what the other 98% of the internet is for, so... Can we keep this little corner family-friendly and work-safe? It's not a big ask, and I'm really, really FUCKING TIRED OF ALL THE "JUST GET OVER IT" COMMENTS!!!! Apologies for yelling, but can't we come to a consensus that Oppo should be inclusive and friendly for both men and women, and that the women shouldn't have to see their fellow women constantly held up as objects of lust for the teenage boys on here? That's what the rest of the internet is for...

So, let's cut out the NSFW shit and keep it on our own personal Kinjas/Tumblrs/Pornhub/etc... and leave Oppo for everyone. Got it?

Good fucking day.

But do you honestly not see what an absolute bullshit cop-out it would be for me (a white lady) to use my position of privilege to tell someone with genuine complaints that "it's not racist just because you deem it to be!"

And that's exactly why I'd never do something like that, and it's equally fucked up for a man to essentially tell a woman that she has no idea what sexism really is and her opinions on what is sexist are not valid.

No offense, but this just reeks of "high schooler who just heard that logical fallacies exist without bothering to find out what they actually are." Go back to figuring out how to find NSFW on tumblr, clearly "debating" isn't your forte and your attempts to discredit me are derailing the conversation.

4. "had my racist buddies star all my shit" I took this to mean that you thought that I called up all my friends and told them to star all my comment on some post on the internet. C'mon. Don't flatter yourself. The masses have spoken.

And yes. I am in high school. We covered rhetoric, debate, and fallacies in AP English last year. It was a while ago. I don't remember everything about it. Congratulations, you've been arguing with someone who hasn't even graduated from high school. I'm taking debate next semester. I've thoroughly enjoyed this argument. And I'm thoroughly enjoying Tumblr, thank you very much. I'm going to sleep now.

Please do continue to think that women are the only people victim to sexism, which is in itself a sexist remark. Gender discrimination and bias swings both ways, honey. Speaking of the gender discrimination, that is actually the very definition of the word 'sexist'! So let's scroll up

*scrolls up*

Some gorgeous female bodies. Nope, not really sexist, just beautiful and somewhat titillating. The models involved probably get compensated rather sweetly for what they do. I see nothing sexist there.

Now, if you wanted to argue against NSFW posts, you could argue that they allow younger viewers to see things that could be considered pornographic in nature (illegal for them to view in some jurisdictions), or for people to see photos that aren't of their sexual preference (how horrid). The former could be a legitimate argument, but I do have a counterpoint:

Pinups are an integral part of American car culture. Every shop, every garage, every hot rod magazine throughout history. What are there? Pinups. Girls posing on cars, girls holding tools, girls in varying states of undress. Whether there to look at, part of a calender, or trying to sell something they have been a part of car culture and fap-fodder for dirty old men for decades.

The nasty fact of it is that the automotive hobby has been traditionally male-dominated, and as such caters very much to their needs, wants, desires, etc. Is it sexist? Unless women are being actively told to piss off, I don't believe so, but given that only recently has the equality/feminist movement begun picking up steam (in part due to the tumblrite femnazis that give true feminism a horrible name) many places won't become perfect gender-neutral family-friendly places overnight.

Here's the deal, sport. You are a mod. (And how that occurs I have no idea.) You may think you deserve some kind of respect around here, but from where I am sitting, I don't see why. I posted a legitimate response to another user's comment. In that response was something which was written in expectation of your little copy-paste response. Regardless, you took the time to pound out a coherent, respectful 7 word dismissal. (Good job on punctuation, by the way.)

If you want better than condescension, try making an effort. Otherwise, you will get exactly what you deserve.

As far as I can tell, change ain't gonna happen with some of you all anyway.

Not sorry.

Jake, just because something is /traditional/ doesn't make it right. There are a lot of traditional things in American culture that are wrong, man.

But, going back to the sexism... The reason those models are in those poses, and those photographs were posted to Oppo stems back to the traditional role of the woman as an object; something to be viewed and admired for her physical attributes, and not as an equal human with equal rights and feelings and such.

You're a decently cool guy, Jake. Seriously, you are, but you're also wrong on this one. Like, George Wallace and Orval Faubus wrong... Like, Sam Brownback on gay marriage wrong... Seriously fucking wrong.

I understand webcrawlers and how Oppo came to be like this, and I also completely see your point (and for the record, I work for a small software company, so there was no offense taken at all, in fact I debated just responding with the song).

The bigger issue with being branded first and foremost as a site which could, or does contain porn (even if it is largely just stuff you could see in an Abercrombie and Fitch catalog) is that we end up flagged so that not everyone can access us from work or school. That part is bothersome for me, it breaks the "illusion of inclusiveness" when people can't even access Oppo.

And for the record, we have seen scat, gore and worse (don't ask) at times. Just not often, thank goodness.

Thanks for the note, I really appreciate hearing the points of view of others. =)

I posted my answer based on Oppo policy. NSFW is currently allowed, so long as guidelines are followed. Is this post sexist? You and a select few think so, I do not. That's where we differ, and why i didn't nuke the post.

I never said it was right because it's traditional , I said (well, tried to imply; it's midnight here and I cannot into coherent thoughts) that it's something that should be dealt with a bit more gently than demanding the banhammer be handed out/instantly crush it from all consciousness. Reduction? Feasible. Complete instant removal at the drop of a hat? Doubtful and a bit draconian for an off-topic site.

Just because someone enjoys showing off their body for money and the glorification of people sexually attracted to them doesn't mean they're suddenly incapable of also being appreciated as humans. I really don't understand how someone posing and possibly being fapped over is discriminatory in any way. As you say, they are generally being looked at as objects, but that door swings both ways because there are male models as well, but attractive men on cars aren't often posted on here except for the one time I did that (mmmm...) after the last NSFW shitstorm we had.

I'm honestly still developing my views on this. I just wish we could discuss this stuff in a calm manner without all of the "LOL JEZEBEL SUX0RS STOOPID FEMINIST BITCH" bullshit and "UGH JUST USE THE SCROLLWHEEL" non-arguments.

I actually quite like the system in place now. Header image, clearly labeled NSFW, and nothing here is much more explicit than a Sears women's undergarmets section. The "google suggests 'nsfw' when you search 'oppositelock'" argument, however, is extraordinarily valid, and perhaps could spurn the creation of a car-related soft-core sub-blog so the horndogs can fap in peace and trade their spank pictures with each other? Maybe make NSFW posts self-expire and delete after a day or two? It's not complete eradication from oppo, but a step in the right direction.

And that's what we need. Steps. Not a full-on screaming argument like I've been seeing in some of (not naming names) these comments.

Jake, I thought we already had a related subblog for the NSFW stuff to go, in the Cigar Lounge. That's a large part of why I think we need to move this stuff off of Oppo, since we already have a place for it to go.

Also, as I've said many times before, and in my original comment on this post, there is the rest of the internet for scantily clad women. I just don't see why we need to have it on Oppo as well. I actually read Oppo at work, and as I've argued before, the NSFW posts are a good way to get it blocked at work for me, and that would be bad... Hell, last time I mentioned that argument, I was told that "Maybe you shouldn't be on Oppo at work."

But seriously, this place needs to be welcoming of /everyone/ who has an interest in cars, and right now, the scantily clad women are doing a good job of chasing off women who like cars, but don't like their half of the species being seen as objects of lust.

I could go on and on, but I'm tired, I have to be at work early, and I've gotta go to Topeka after work, so I need my energy. Still, just think about how it would feel if you were constantly treated as an object, because of your genitalia, from an early age, and how it would feel if you were bombarded with images of how you should look, and how you're nothing but an object for the other sex to fantasize and fetishize. Then, think about how it'd feel if you joined an online community that was initially welcoming, only to be bombarded with those same images, after you found your online home.

Peace, bro.

I totally forgot about the Cigar Lounge. That's what needs to be done, just push people over to there for their slightly lewder tastes.

Agreed, there is no reason people should feel unwelcome here, but it's not an overnight snap-your-fingers change. The fact I had completely forgotten about the Cigar Lounge means that it isn't advertised enough as an outlet for that sort of thing, really.

But... that happens. Parts of it, at least. G.I Joe, Batman, Superman, etc. are all impossibly perfect muscle-bound variants of the male specimen that one could hardly hope to achieve. Girls constantly sexualize and paint boy band members as sex objects to be fetishized. I grew up incredibly self-conscious due to a couple physical deformities which were simply a large nose and collapsed chest which I have only recently gotten over and embraced. Not to mention the obnoxious pressure to be, uuh, adequately endowed. No matter how many people said size doesn't matter it was still a constant worry in my head until I lost my virginity and had all doubts erased. That might be a different issue, but my sleep-deprived head connected the two so I thought it worth mentioning.

Either way, on the subject at hand now that I'm re-aware of the Cigar Lounge, assuming authorship is as easy to get there as it is on Oppo I support a full push of NSFW content to there. Maybe some of the personal stuff as well.

This is a known quantity, but there are some defeats for this, and I used a couple of them. Including the fact that this is isn't my google account, nor my computer.

But short of a new IP address, with no history, cookies or anything else, on a freshly built PC, Google will try to tailor results to you, and even then you're likely getting an interesting amalgam of others' interests.

There have been a number of "safe search" programs which have blocked Oppo over the last few years, nearly all of them for NSFW content.

Sorry, but I spent hundreds of hours in university studying feminism and I am yet to come across any reason for why posting a picture depicting the natural female body would constitute as "sexist crap." Are you offended by biology? Or does your distaste stem from a disapproval of one finding beauty in nature? Nobody was harmed in these photographs. No comments were made by the author in regards to any feelings towards the women depicted. Any sexism you see in this post is purely of your own creation. If the title was "Stance & Sluts," for example, then I would agree that the author has clearly presented a sexist bias. But mere presentation of nudity speaks nothing of one's thoughts regarding women's rights as human beings.

If you are offended, by this post, it is by your own choice. The fact that you followed a link that clearly contained NSFW photographs demonstrates your choice to willingly consume this material. So do not come here and pretend that you have been egregiously wronged by the author because nobody is buying that story.

Hi again, Snap. Dealing with the First Amendment is literally part of my job every single day. A user-moderated forum that allows or disallows certain content based on moderator-defined rules does not actually violate free speech. Free speech is a legal protection and legal entitlement that protects citizens from legal or criminal repercussions for their speech (for the most part), but it's not meant to be used as a cop-out shield in a private setting (in this case Oppo is, in a manner of speaking, a private place in which we, the users, are given public access, similar to how stepping into a grocery store means you are being given public access to private property). It's not meant to be used to hand-wave away dissenting voices within a private community. It's not meant to make excuses when folks are dragging their feet on social progress, nor to shield those who harass members of a community for having the audacity to speak up. It's not freedom from consequences.

Just thought I'd offer a clarification of what Freedom of Speech actually is.

I think that some mods do a wonderful job of making this a fun inclusive place and others are just as bad the shitheel dumbfucks who post the purient, backwards, ignorance that starts these flare ups.

The second thing that I would do would be to put a hard ban on nudity and sexually explicit content as it does nothing to further the goals of Oppo.

I'd also appoint an active woman moderator, that's be if I could find someone who wanted to try to wrangle this out of control boys club.
